Ignore vertical grind marks.Although not advertised as "Wootz Steel", the predominently horizontal flowing patterns do resemble those on ancient Persian Damascus swords.In Wootz steel, very hard carbides (lighter stripes) are formed in a bed of very tough steel (darker grey). The combination provides for very good edge holding (stay sharp) without brittleness (chip or crack prone).
