I've been looking to find a magnetic knife block to replace my classic style wood block (angled with knife slots). As mounting a magnetic strip to the wall wasn't an option, I decided to look into some different high-quality variations that were available. One of the two finalists was a stylish angled magnetic block (brand starts with Oz-) made up of multiple forward-angled wood levels. It had room to hold a couple more knives, but took up considerably more counter space. It also was a bit front-heavy, allowing it to fall forward with minor pressure. Its magnets were also stronger - too strong, in fact, as they pulled the knife edge against the wood veneer. Though it advertised the top-most level as being functional for tablets or cookbooks, I found it too bulky to shift and move in order to use the space for anything other than additional knives. Also, due to the angled design, the flat levels weren't long enough for half my knives. It's been retained as a backup storage option for steak knives and smaller, older blades. As the winner of my search, this Made In Cookware block was ultimately more pleasing to the eye and had slightly gentler magnets. While I've had no issues thus far with knives staying in place, I would have liked to see the magnets be a tiny bit stronger. Generally, they're plenty strong so long as your knives have a flat bolster that can rest at the top edge. If the bolster is curved or the knife is thicker, you may run into issues. I have a stylishly curved paring knife that I have to angle a bit precariously to rest on the block. The magnets in this block seemed a bit small, arranged in pairs (one near top, another about halfway down) in four vertical columns and allows for four knives per side (8 total). I would have liked to see 3 magnetic strips running parallel from the top edge along the long flat sides of the block. As I have multiple styles and sizes of knives, this would have allowed me to make better use of the space, and offered a couple spots for additional knives to rest perpendicular at the bottom (e.g., cleaver or slender utility knife). Given the existing magnet arrangement, some of my knives won't have a home on it.Even so - this block is a pleasure to see on the counter, uses only a bit more space than my previous angled block, yet still manages to be less imposing due to the shape and arrangement. It's also very stable and solid - both a huge plus in my experience. The weighted and non-slip base offers peace-of-mind. And let's not ignore how easy it is to clean!Overall a very positive experience. Highly recommended.
